1 Okay, let me start off by stating that with this post, I am NOT trying to insult anyone, I am just wondering...

Have you ever questioned how anyone got into a nursing program? How they passed their classes? How they passed the NCLEX?

I'm asking because I was talking to a nursing student a few weeks ago and he was telling me how he was able to get into the nursing program because he had a 3.0 GPA. He said he got this GPA by networking and going to so many schools to take easy professors who basically give you an "A" for whatever course (such as Anatomy, Physiology, Microbio.,etc). At first I thought okay he's not book smart, but he probably has a passion for wanting to become a nurse. He said the reason he was doing it was because nurses in our area make good money. I asked about his TEAS score and he said he did okay, that he barely "passed."

Now, I've been hospitalized NUMEROUS times. So the fact that some one like that is going to become a nurse kind of scares me. People like him take care of people like me...

Has anyone ever encountered someone whose degree is questionable?

Just asking... Last edit by walkingonthestars on Aug 22, '11

I have, more often than I'd like. You could say that about any profession, though, really....Hope no one has talked to me and thought that.

Well, they can slide by all they want in pre-req's. I really don't see anyone sliding by on the NCLEX though. You have to have some knowledge and thought process (and do well under pressure).

If that person got in by playing the system to take the easy way out he probably won't be able to rough it when he's finally working and realizes how hard nursing is. Truthfully we are so underpaid and overworked for what we do and for the immense responsibility on us. We are the first person the hospital or doctor will push under the bus when something goes wrong! I doubt he'll be able to stay the course so I wouldn't worry too much about that. On top of that hospitals are being pressured by govt and safety councils to improve quality care and most have emergency response teams available as resources which protects patients. Of course its still good to be a patient advocate and have your family watch over you when your in the hospital.

Quote from walkingonthestarsWell, I'm not a nurse yet, but I'm doing my best to complete my requirements to get into a nursing program. If you're already a nurse, how do you deal/work with someone like that?:smackingf

Only one person so far. During clinicals, he charted an assessment finding which would indicate the person was dead because he didn't know that's what the medical term meant. This was in the final clinical rotation of school.

Had someone training on our floor one day and I just thought "how did the nurse mgr sit across from them, interview them, and hire them" REALLY??? Something definitely didn't connect and they had worked as a nurse before. If they had been my nurse I would've signed out AMA.....people were asking if they were really a nurse. Needless to say they were gone before orientation was up.
