Need to Review and Can't Afford a Refresher Course - Please Help

1 I was previously an ER and ICU nurse who became ill five years ago. I'm doing better and want to go back to work part-time but I know that there have been changes. I want to make sure I'm proficient and intend to review through self-study.

In the student nurses forum I found links to first year lectures and meds, etc. Not sure how much help that will be but hey, at this point, I'll take anything! A review of the basics won't hurt.

Can you recommend a good med-surg book, a pharm book and anything else you think is appropriate? I am a little concerned about the meds that have been approved since I last worked.

I've reviewed ACLS, some surprizing changes there! While you're advising me - would you care to recommend a unit or discipline? I'm not too eager to work in ER again even though at one time I wouldn't have worked anywhere else.

I have that one and I still look up stuff in it. The reason I say technical, because now that you don't have a silly exam to take, you can concentrate on the stuff you gotta know. I don't have any of her other books, but someday I might spring for one.

In my last semester in the BSN program, we had a test on the top 100 meds prescribed in America. We had to know trade name and generic name; side effects; black label warnings (if any); indications; and patient education. Using this site, I got a 98%.

You can always look on youtube for skills refreshers, there are also a lot of Made Incredibly Easy books, NCLEX Q&A review style books. There are MANY continuing ed courses at local community colleges and online that could help you too.I found this one series of books I thought was amazing, Pharmacology Success: A Course Review Applying Critical Thinking to Test Taking (Davis's Success) this book had features such as ECG strips: What med would you think the patient would be on if the strip looked like this?

Yes it's dry CathyRN06. No dumbing down. Very "medical" in nature, but that does not hinder flow, if you know what I mean. No silly nursing stuff at all IMHO (if you know what I mean).Check out your local bookstore or library to see if there is one in stock and go take a peek.
