Kudos for working the holidays!

12 I want to say thank you to all the nurses who worked this Holiday and are missing their family while taking care of someOne elses loved one. You all are truly remarkable people! God Bless each and every one of you and many blessings for the Coming New Year!! Love and Peace to all !!!!
Thanks for your heartwarming graceful kind words!!!I love the atmosphere of the ED during holidays! We had an MD on Christmas that loves to grill, so with Tornado Warning after Severe Thunderstorm Warning he was out in his raincoat flipping our steaks, ribs, and ChickenPlus, the atmosphere of Christmas is just magical to me in the hospital even on the wards- more "lighthearted" if just for a day. I never minded the sacrifice- far more rewards than giving up something. I love my colleagues- and even if it is "cliche"- they are my family too!!You spend more time with colleagues than your own family anyway

Thank you. God bless you as well. It was a long day, but those patients didn't want to be there either, I tried to make the best of it with them.

When I was in ED a couple of weeks ago they had one of us dressed as Santa and one as an elf walking around wishing people merry Christmas

That's very nice and thoughtful of you to post. I was off yesterday but worked Monday and today. I do not look forward to having a job as a nurse where I will have to work holidays. I know it's part of the career. I work in a clinic now and we have weekends and holidays off. I remember days when I was a CNA working through the holidays though. The holiday pay was good though.

I never had a problem working the holidays. Yes, the pay is an advantage, but the atmosphere always make for a better day. We would all bring in "goodies" and pick at food and drink smoothies all day. We all knew we were in the same boat. We worked every other holiday and it switched the next year. Plus, the MD's were always discharging patients the days before holidays so we had a pretty low census! I don't have tons of family I hang around during the holidays, so picking up people's shifts so they could enjoy time with their little ones always got me on people's good sides, too!

Laughter is the best medicine

Rather a long time ago, as a clerk in the Nursing Dept. Office (when such things existed) (largish university hospital); single, unattached to anything or anyone, no pets, etc.; I always volunteered to work holidays.It was wonderful. Volunteering got me points, in itself; & a comp day of my choosing later.Low census, zero walk-ins, not all that much to "do." Eager to do anything useful, I was often called to go do this, that, the other thing, whatever. More experience.A well-remembered high point of my early healthcare experience.
