Has anyone read any great books about nursing or nurses? Healthcare in general? I love historical fiction and am looking for recommendations.

Highly recommended:The Midwife by Gay Courter. Home Before Morning: The Story of an Army Nurse in Vietnam by Lynda Van Devanter. I loved both of these books..

There is a trilogy that I've read at least 4 times. It's by Tilda Shalof. The first is called "A nurses story", the second is "The making of a nurse", the third is "lives in the balance"It's a very real series. With real experiences, and true feelings. Totally, and completely worth it. Amazing.

A lot of the Ann Perry novels have a character who is a nurse in Victorian London. Great series. She actually writes several series, all set in the same time period-- I think the ones you want would be the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series, in which her husband is a police detective. Lots of historical accuracy, social commentary, great mysteries. (Another is the William Monk series.)

Quote from loriangel14Tilda also wrote a book called "Opening My Heart" . It's an account of her own experiences as a patient while undergoing heart surgery. She also wrote one called "Camp Nurse"

Opening My Heart was facinating.

Anything by Echo Heron.

Oh, I love anything by Echo Heron as well. She has several that are based on her life as a nurse. Then theres several fiction books but they are out of print, so you have to find them used. My favorite author, hands down.
