Near death experiences stories

1 As a spin off to the nursing ghost stories thread, I am an avid reader of anything regarding death/dying. I just wondered how many near death experience stories we as nurses hear from our patients. Apparently, the bright light stories are common, as are the stories about floating above your body. Any others???? Would LOVE to hear them!

OH, you should love that new show on discovery health about near-death expeirences. This is not from a patient but from my ex-husband. He is a powerline worker and has been for 15 years. His second year on a job he was learning to do the actual line work climbing on the pole while the line was hot. He was working on a pole and his foreman wasn't paying attention nor was the operator of a truck who was trying to position another pole close to his. I have never understood how it happened but somehow the pole pinned him against his pole and his arm touched the hot line. Needless to say that much electricity can easily kill. The jolt knocked him free and he fell to the ground so he got a double wammy with the electric and the fall. He said that as he was on the ground he felt him self dying. He didn't recall seeing anything but he remembers hearing the sound of children laughing in the sweetest way. He actually tears up when he talks about it. A co-worker did have to do CPR because he was not breathing and he had no pulse. It turns out it took a few mintues for the boss to come over to check on Gary because he didn't believe his men that Gary was hurt. He lost a large part of the muscle on the upper part of his arm and the electricity traveled through his thoracic cavity and exited out the side of his abdomen.

My mother has a story. Her heart stopped from Demerol after surgery when she was 43yo, and for 10-15 seconds she was asystole. No breathing, no consciousness. She says she watched them code her, first from the side of the bed, the she was 'standing' at the foot, seeing her body and seeing all of them resusciating her. Then the next thing she knew was being in the bed again, looking up at the faces calling her name. No bright light, no figures or anything like that.I still don't know what to make of it. I'm very skeptical (atheist, not a big believer in anything paranormal) and have read lots of studies on the causes of such experiences however, nothing really explains 'seeing' what is going on without even being conscious.

A couple summers ago when I nearly bled to death, before we called the ambulance (didn't know I was bleeding then), I passed out on my DH and had to have him help me to the bathroom when I came to. You know when nurses say that they never want to hear a bad patient say that thay need to do #2? There's a reason for that.I Valsalvaed down and had a seizure, according to DH.I remember seeing a lot of bright white and hearing singing along with this horrible ringing in my ears, but didn't see any wings or halos or anything like that. People were just walking around in street clothes. Whoever was singing came to fetch me and told me it was my turn to pick a song. While I was thinking, I heard DH saying "Come out of it, baby."I woke up in a VERY undignified position, and we got the ambulance and got me to the hospital, where they found me to be a couple quarts low, and transfused me.I told DH about what I saw about a year later, when we could laugh about the whole thing. He says now, had he known what was up, he'd have kept his mouth shut! LOL

My husband was shot in the eye as a young kid. He remembers seeing a person in white on one side of him and a person in black on the other side and they were pulling him back and fort. He believes it was life and death fighting over him. He eventually woke up and is now 28 years old. With a prosthetic eye of course.

I had a Hospice pt who was actively dying, she had been comatose for 2 days, and suddenly she opened her eyes and held out her arms and stated "I'm hugging Jesus", and then died.

My grandmother told me that she was waiting to have some XRays done, and she heard someone say 'catch her!' Then she was looking down at herself and some nurses, one kept saying "I can't get a blood pressure". Then she felt a lot of pain in her chest and started coughing. She ended up in ICU for a few days.My dad was put on a morphine gtt on a Wednesday. We saw him on Thursday, and we could not arouse him. Suddenly he sat up in the bed, with his arms outstretched, and his eyes wide open. He flopped back in bed, and still we could not arouse him. In the morning, I called the nurses' station, at 6:30 am, and was told his nurse was in report. His death cert had the time 635 AM. Yes, I think he wanted me to know ASAP. I know he (and my brother) have tried to contact me, as well as others I have known.

I work in an ICU, so as you can imagine, we run across this fairly frequently. several years ago, we had a young patient (40's?) who was hemorrhaging after surgery. He was hypotensive, vented, and unconscious (without meds) for almost 8 hours. A couple days later, the tech was giving him a bath on the night shift. He looked at her, and said, "I know you-- you're the angel who sat with me that night". Sure enough, she was the person who sat and held his hand through a lot of the night he was bleeding out. He had never met her before, and was unconscious by the time she came into his room that night.
