I've got a promotion!Rating: (votes: 0) I am now the shiny new Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist (I told them I would need 2 or 3 ID badges to put that on). I have looked at the specialty forums, since it seems I am now a specialist...it says so in my title...but don't see the one that fits me. Can anybody recommend any good books or informational sites on this subject? They have never had a CDI Specialist in my little facility before, and nobody there has ever worked with one or really has any idea what they do, so I'm looking for some good advice. After I finish my current classes, I will probably take the AHIMA classes, but I need to get started now. I don't have any advice, but just wanted to say congrats! Comment:

This is a newer role they literally just hired 6 where I work and i see other hospitals hiring them. According to our administration we are loosing hundreds of thousands of reimbursements because we fail to 'tell the story' of the true clinical condition in our charting. I think our clinical documentation specialist are mostly advising MD's in how to improve their documentation. I have noticed some very detailed pt dx info popping up ... with 2 to 3 paragraph descriptions of pt problems at admission instead of abdominal pain. Good luck!

Thanks for all the good words!Yes, I just had a big wound meeting with some folks and showed them the difference between the nursing and physician documentation. They were pretty staggered! Some of the things that go on are pretty shocking. For instance, I did not know that independent companies get paid a percentage to audit charts and refuse the claims. That doesn't sound like a disinterested review to me ;p
