Certifications: Are they worth it?

I'm debating on getting either my Oncology or Med-surg certification but I'm not sure how valuable they are. Any opinions? I'm not looking to change positions anytime in the near future but thought they could improve my overall portfolio. Any input is appreciated
There are several hospitals in my area that actually require a certification; at least, that is what they advertise when they post a job: certification required. They do not care if you have an ADN, BSN, MSN, or diploma, but require a certification in the area you plan to work.

I think certifications are a great idea. You took the extra step to better yourself by obtaining that certification! You also gain more knowledge from preparing and in my opinion, knowledge is power. Most places also give you a little pay incentive for having a certification, too.

Education is never wasted, unless you refuse to put any effort into learning.Whether or not the employer wants it or is willing to pay differentials, studying for a certification only makes you a better nurse.My hospital requires quite a few certs to work in the ED, and the first time I took them, I learned a ton. Not as much on the recerts, but the reviews are good for me (especially when something has been updated).
