Please Any advice or opinion is helpful!

Hey guys,

let me be Short and sweet.

I am starting nursing school soon. Is it possible for me to (after I graduate and work like a year), get a part time job such as 2 twelve hour shifts a week instead of 3 shifts? And more importantly, consecutively like monday and tuesday, or thursday and friday etc? (or even 15 hour shfits, the concept is 2 consecutive days a week though, that is what is important, even if it was night shifts, nasty work, scummy hospital, whatever).

Do people exist who partake of such a part time or halftime position?

I can explain details later (if anyone is kind enough to share their experience and words of wisdom!).

My sister is in the Dallas-Fortworth area, and says she has never heard of such a schedule unless you were chummy with the bosses (she has one more semester to go in the nursing school). So I was just wondering if it was something that was common or if it was forbidden etc by procedure or something. its very common but you will probably have to do Every other weekend.

Thanks evolvingrn! Ok. I had thought that to get this schedule I would work rotating shifts and stuff, and that is fine. I am just wanting to live in monterrey mexico, (about 2 hours from mcallen regional), and drive up every week for the two shifts and then go back. If I had to work 3 or 4 days, or monday and thursday, it would be a huge spoke in the wheel you know? So anyways, thanks for the input! I just wanted to know it was possible!(still, anyone reading this dont think it is solved! I love input ! ! !)

I was fortunate enough to work as an Emergency Room Tech during NS over the weekend nights. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. This was a bit of a problem for Monday morning clinicals but I had a great boss and even greater nursing staff and thus doable. Remember, where there is a will, there will be a way. Thanks for the good word! I do have a huge will for this, specifically the 2 consecutive shifts a week thing, and a faith in the Almight God! Yes of course....I have been scheduling nurses for 22 yrs . I always try to give nurses what they prefer and is very common for nurses to want to work as many of their shift in a row as possible. That way they can get more days off in a row...2 12's in a row no problem. You also need to check the state in which you want to work b/c the hospital also has to follow the labor law for that state.

I work 2x 12s a week, usually consecutive nights, and every third weekend. It might be hard to get such a shift as a new grad though, but good luck.

I have never heard of a 15 hour shift, but I have had friends do two back-to-back 8s (i.e..straight through) thus effectively a 16 and it is a KILLER. I think what is important to learn is how much you have to work to qualify for benefits. Where I am you have to hit 24 hours to qualify, so it's vital that you optimize your hours to hit the mark.Oh and please don't go driving long distances after your second 12 hour shift. Put a comforter and a pillow in you car and curl up in the back seat for 2-3 hours at least. Otherwise you could end up back where you work...
