research project count toward college credits?

I've tried looking this up on here but had little luck finding anything . How do you find if a research project can count as college credit? The research project will be for one of the following: critical care, trauma, or surgery.
you would probably need to talk to the Dean or an Advisor in the degree program. To gain credit they would want you to pay for the hours, to follow their scientific method, get all the legal stuff signed, and have a mentor. Otherwise, your project is a do-it-yourself project and not necessarily consistent with higher education standards.
