Diagnosed with ADHDRating: (votes: 0) The answer is ...yes. Comment:
I have been tested for drugs, smoking, vaccine levels, but never asked about my own medical condition. I do get my health insurance from my husband's company, so perhaps if you are getting your health insurance from the hospital they will ask for your medical information. I have never had an interview where I had to reveal my medical history.
Comment:
ANY position that requires a pre-employment physical is going to ask for a detailed medical history. Failure to disclose is typically cause for dismissal, once discovered.
Comment:
Besides the usual vaccinations, hearing test, etc, they can only ask you things that might limit your ability to do your job. If you can physically or mentally do the job, the rest is none of their business.Edited to add: I have never been asked my medical history other than stated above. I was not aware that this was even legal.
Comment:
I work for the government. Completely legal. Someone in a nursing position must be found to be fit for service; if there's a bunch of things "wrong" with someone but they don't impair the candidate's ability to perform the functions of the job, it doesn't matter. What DOES matter is if it isn't disclosed, but is later claimed to be a disability arising out of their employment....and it turns out they had the condition PRIOR to employment. So yes....very legal.

I have ADHD, use my hospital's insurance, have taken new employee drug tests, and I have never been asked about my medical conditions/history. When I first started I was concerned that Adderall would show up on the drug test and was ready to provide proof I had a prescription, but the drug test my hospital uses doesn't test for Adderall.
Comment:
I take Adderall, if they test for amphetamines, that will pop. I pop and show them my RX. Never an issue. If you don't want to pop, stay off for a solid 3 days.

My position is that I didn't give up my right to keep my health information private when I became a healthcare professional. If you're asked for a medical history, you should ask what the information is to be used for, and who will have access to it. An ethical employer will not make this information available to your supervisors. Even drug testing is supposed to be confidential, unless of course you pop positive for a substance that has the potential for abuse (e.g. pain meds, amphetamines), in which case you'll need to produce a valid prescription. For what it's worth, not all employers request health information, and if you have something to hide you may want to restrict your job search to those who do not. It's rarely a good idea to disclose a mental illness to an employer; our profession is not kind to those with 'nonconformities'. Wishing you the best of luck!
