I work in a 25 bed, very busy, ER. I am currently trying to research some better alternatives for communication in the ER. By communication, I mean between nursing and support staff. We were using spectralink phones, however, after losing about 20 sets, we can no longer afford them. Currently, our charge nurse carries a spectralink. Everyone else uses overhead paging or face-to-face. Most of our communications are brief; incoming calls, new bedded patients, clean beds or incoming squads. Most communications don't even need to be acknowledged, just relayed. My thought was something like restaurants use to notify the hostess of clean tables. We don't want to look like drive-thru employees, so something in a clip or badge would be nice. We do have computers and trackers throughout the ER that show waiting, incoming and clean beds but most nurses are up to their elbows in patient care and unable to look at them in an instant.
What do your units use?
Thanks for your input.
