Need some advice... can I change my start date?

so i was offered a job 2 weeks ago at john hopkins in maryland .my problem is that i live in boston and they want me to report for orientation on the 29th. so that gives me 4 weeks to find a place ,move and get my temporary permit and start orientation. i am working my butt like crazy to make the money i need on such short notice and i just want to know what would you do?... ask for a later start date or get your butt down there.i am going to md next week to look at places but like the saying goes time is $$ so hopelfully i find a place.

Have you considered calling the Human Resources department and asking them if they have anyone who can assist you in finding a temporary place to live (paid) until you find a more permanent place to rent/buy, or whatever you plan on doing? Have you asked them about relocation reimbursement funds? Some hospitals offer money for relocating. They may also be able to assist you with other relocation assistance, i.e. transportation, etc. I know that a lot of travel nurse agencies have programs like that (prepaid apartments). By all means, it wouldn't hurt to call your new place of employment and explain your situation to them. Although you may need to change your date of hire, they may view this as unfavorable (they may think uh-oh, will she be someone who misses a lot?). But on the other hand, they will appreciate your honesty, and openess. Good luck.
Thanks for responding I have called Hr and they don't have temp housing but they gave me a list of places to stay. I looked at apts yesterday and hopefully all goes well. They do offer relocation assistance but it is a monetary assistance or I can have them move my stuff for me.I am staying positive and I am not changing my start date thanks for the response
