At a crossroad maybe you can help...

First I must say I have nothing but respect and admiration for bedside nurses...a job that is not a good fit for me, as I have learned. I went to direct-entry MSN program but now I am planning to go back to school for PhD so that I can get a job away from the bedside and my nursing degree is not a total waste. It's a tough decision to make to apply for the PhD program. Trying to research it to see if I can manage the type of classes and assignments together with the time commitment to the program - 3 years. Please offer what you can to help me understand more clearly what is involved in a nursing PhD education program. Gotta salvage my nursing training and find work that I can enjoy doing, or at least not dread going to work everyday. Thanks.
I'm not sure what ultimate avenue you are pursuing. Do you want to do research? Teach? Be an administrator?There are a lot of other avenues for nurses besides "bedside nursing" even if you your education isn't beyond a BSN. Certainly with an MSN you are currently pursuing there are multiple opportunities even with that. I think it's more where your interest lies that will be the determining factor.
What exactly is your MSN in? A generic nursing degree? Education? Management?
