Part-time questionRating: (votes: 0) Is it common to work 5- 6 hours a day, 4-5 days a week for a part-time job? I had a rude awakening when i started a new job as an LPN at a clinic and found out that their interpretation of PART-TIME meant 5 hr shifts. I was honestly expecting 8 hr shifts, 2 -3 or even 4 days a week. Now I feel stupid. The last time I worked 5 hr shifts was when I was 17 working fast food. ![]() I am from New Jersey and in the nursing field that type of scheduling is not very common at all for part time. usually part time is 24 or 30 hours a week which is divided into either 8, 10, or 12 hour shifts depending on the facility and need. Comment: Was this discussed during your interview?? Or did you just 'suppose' it would be full shifts? As a part-timer, they will give you whatever hours THEY need you to cover.Best wishes!!Comment: That schedule is typical of "part time" in the clinics I've worked at, part timers are scheduled during peak clinic hours.Comment: It's my fault... I assumed 8 hr+ shifts. At all the places i have worked at, i have never encountered a nurse work less than 8 hrs a day whether it was full- time, part -time or on call.I eneded up leaving that job. My pay wasn't worth the hassle and it barley covered my daycare expenses for my kids. I also noted that this facility liked to staff their nurses for 7 1/2 hr shifts instead of 8. WTH? just a few hrs shy of full-time. i think it's unfair bec they can't even get benefits.Comment: This is part -time job but their conditions are not good. If this job is not most essential to you, you should not work there.
