Best way to train in NICU

]I am a fairly recent new grad RN (almost a year of experience), working in LA at a major hospital doing med/surg. My dream has always been to become a NICU rn, but now I feel like it is near impossible to reach it. After I graduated from nursing school, I wanted to be in those New grad NICU residency programs...but that never happened.

So now that I'm almost at a year of exp, I most likely won't be able to apply to any more new grad nicu programs.

My dilemma and question is: How should I go about transferring into the NICU? My current hospital has an internship program that starts in Jan, but already has a lengthy waiting list. Also, I wish to relocate back to Northern california, and hoping to find a way to get into a NICU up there. Please, any suggestions/tips??
