HR recruiter/Hiring managers- Views on call backs after turning in application

Hi there, I turned an application in last week for an RN position at a conmunity hospital and I want to call back to check on the status & to show that I'm really intestered. I've been reading posts on various sites, some say go for it & others are against it. What are your views on this my fellow nurses & HR staff? Thank you in advance for all comments.
