brilliant freaking idea - pull ALL CNA's. . .

13 so a couple of weeks ago, our hospital's DON decided to hold a hospital-wide CNA meeting - at 0730! Every single CNA in the hospital had to go. So, while we were changing shifts and giving report, there were no CNA's on the floor. I work on an acute rehab floor, so our patient need to be toileted and showered and have assistance to eat breakfast (which is served at 0730!)

Anyone else think this is. . .incredibly stupid? Why not have two meetings - one in the morning and one around 1500?

We actually had a patient fall occur at 0745 on our floor. Bed alarm was on, just no one responded quickly enough (patient fine - just trying to get to the bathroom like everyone else)

Just. . .dumb. I feel like our DON is completely out of touch with floor nursing.
That is incredibly stupid!

And we all thought the dodo bird was extinct . . . NOT!!

Yep, incredibly stupid - sounds like about the right time to have a mandatory staff meeting, or an inservice!

That is so disturbing to hear ! There is something wrong when one person has enough power to do a thing that endangers all the patients. I can see why the CNAs would feel powerless to question the decision, but the floor nurses... Were they too intimidated to question the DON's decision? Or ignored?

op, i will nominate your don for the 2011 darwin awards; you had better warn her that the competition is pretty tough. here is the tale of 2010's winner:and the winner is... zookeeper friedrich riesfeldt ( paderborn , germany ) fed his constipated elephant 22 doses of animal laxative and more than a bushel of berries, figs and prunes before the plugged-up pachyderm finally got relief. investigators say ill-fated friedrich, 46, was attempting to give the ailing elephant an olive oil enema when the relieved beast unloaded. the sheer force of the elephant's unexpected defecation knocked mr. riesfeldt to the ground where he struck his head on a rock as the elephant continued to evacuate 200 pounds of dung on top of him. it seems to be just one of those freak accidents that proves.... '**** happens' the full list of awards may be found under "central", off-topic discussions. we are always on the look-out for potential darwin winners, so keep 'em coming!

this is why I have a problem with nursing. No one says anything. Here would be my own personal style of handling the situation...If it was a planned meeting for 0730 and everyone knew in advance, I would have pulled the DON to the side & start listing some concerns...#1 Stressing patient safety & educating the DON of our morning routine...#2 I'm not the only nurse that feels this way....(try to get at least another coworker to pull him/her to the side later on that day as well)#3 In a joking manner (with smiling but serious eyes) I hope I'm not scheduled to work that day. I would only say this if I felt like it went in one ear and ran out the other....

From my personal experience management usually holds mass mandatory CNA meetings for the purpose of allowing them to complain about the nurses. It's usually "The nurse won't help me," or "The nurse is rude to me." Betcha they served them breakfast too!! Or, and this could be a good thing or a bad thing, they're about to get laid off or have their hours cut.

needs to happen more often so nurses get a greater appreciation for cna's. the don clearly knows the effect it would have and was probably making a point to the nurses and or cna's about something. the don most likely was getting trivial complaints about cna's by nurses or cna's complaining about poo nurses.so what was the meeting about, i'm sure you can ask your cna's to find out?

Dude, it was the timing that was inappropriate. It compromised patient care.
