Need advice about job situation

1 Okay guys...I am currently a new grad who has worked as a Nursing Assistant and a Unit Secretary in this particular hospital for 5 years. Never a bad evaluation..always got a raise..no problems..so when time came to graduate school...NO RN job!! But yet some of my classmates who have never worked a job in their lives got jobs at that hospital right off the bat?! I dont get it...I would think that hospitals would hire their own before hiring outside. I guess I was naive to think that I would never have a problem finding a RN job because I already worked in a hospital and had a GREAT record. I would think that they would want someone who knows about the hospital...easier to train in some ways. Any thoughts?? I really dont get it.

Didn't you talk with your supervisor to see if there was an RN opening on your unit for you? I'm confused because our techs that have gone to nursing school have talked about it the whole time our boss, HR and we were all aware that they would be getting jobs with us upon graduation. Maybe call HR because I also don't understand why they would hire strangers first. Best of luck to you.

Never assume. Did you network? Did you speak with the neccesary persons?Don't just assume because you went to RN school, your bosses would be mind-readers to know you wanted in.Your post reads like the job was supposed to be a walk-through or pretty much handed to you. Yes it may have been that, but if you did not do any ground work, you can't in all honesty lay the blame at another's door.It may not be too late.Try try try.

Jules A--Yeah everyone knew I was in nursing school and they did not have any jobs on the unit for me upon graduation. And I left messages and emails to HR to try to be placed somewhere else...but NO replies to my messages! But yet some of my classmates who have never held jobs got jobs there. I worked all through school and was a dedicated employee! What happened to loyalty??

Had you talked to them about when you were graduating and asked how you should go about the application process? If so, did you do exactly as they told you to (applied by whatever date they gave you, submitted all the material they asked for, etc?) If so, then there is something else going on and it's unlikely you'll ever get more information than "the other candidates were a better fit for the position." I used to work in HR and if they didn't want to hire or transfer someone, they usually would not give the person any specific into as to why.

Sorry that happened. This is probably of no consolation to you but it is often difficult to transition into a nursing position when a unit is used to you in a more supportive type role. If the job market weren't so tight, my advice would be to never work on the unit you worked on as anything other than a nurse. Hope you can find a position in your hospital.

MBARNBSN--I have been applying months before graduation...NOTHING. In fact, my manager even sent me and email telling me to apply for one of the five positions she had available and interviewed me and gave the position to everyone but me. Why did she bother to tell me to apply??!! And when trying to transfer elsewhere no go. I am not lying I was a good employee...never called off and worked extra when they needed me to. That is why I dont understand...I could understand if I had bad evaluations or called off or something.

You need to ask your manager WHY she chose others over you........

Are you so valuable in your present postition that they would hate to get rid of you? That may be a naive idea...but possible. I would just be applying, shaking hands, calling over and over again at all hospitals in the area. My Grandad always said..."If you want a job, you just keep showing up and asking for it until they're so sick of seeing you asking...they just go ahead and hire you"....Wise and undereducated brilliant man.
