I would seriously re-consider moving out here unless you have 1. substantial savings 2. family in the area or 3. a definite job. The market for nurses here is NOT great right now. Best of luck to you whatever you decide - looks like you have a lot of experience, so maybe you'll have better luck with the job market.

Travelers in the Bay Area (L.A. is similar, I think) make $35-40 hr. Some of the hospitals here don't give travelers/per diem agency nurses computer access, so you have to talk another nurse into logging in to the computer so you can check labs and orders. I had no idea that happened - travelers at my former hospital in MO always had full access. Just an additional question to ask when you find an agency.

Basic nurses are known as licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) in California, so using the 'LVN' title might render your internet searches slightly more effective. The LVN job markets in all parts of California are absolutely flooded with too many new grads and experienced nurses looking for work. I'm originally from California, and even with my RN license and 4+ years of LVN experience, I must remain out-of-state if I wish to remain employed in nursing.

Do a search on the site for threads addressing this and you will see that the employment picture for LVNs in CA is dismal. Can verify that there is little to nothing available in the greater LA area, even for LVNs with experience.

I'm an RN who would like to be in the same area, but I've looked into it, and it's grim. I'm staying in texas to stay employed, too.

WoW!!! Thank you ALL for the info. May be rethinking this relocation thing. LA looks like such a great place to live but you can't live if you can't work. I have an awesome job (aka great pay) right now and as a LPN in FL, I've NEVER had a problem getting a job, got laid off once and drove 5 min down the road and had another job in less than an hour! So Cali is lookin' kindda scary. Thanks again y'all............LOVE this forum!
