Tobi nebs

hello everyone. i'm just concerned. is it safe for PREGNANT nurses to administer tobi nebs for the patients. pt is on ventilator and we use filter on the exhalation port, but i do not know how safe it is.

Inhaled Tobramycin is an FDA catagory D drug in terms of recieving the medication.I'd discuss the filters being used on the ex port with RT then discuss it with your OB/GYN. In theory any residual drug is probably precipitating out in the vent circuit and if there is no droplets/particulate coming through the filter then it's unlikely that any drug is. http://www.mims.com/USA/drug/info/tobramycin

Where I work we do not assign pregnant nurses to patients who are getting Tobi nebs.

I'm going to go the other way. We were told by a reputable pulmunologist that the blood levels of those on TOBI therapy end up quite low, meaning that those who are administering would theoretically have even less end up systemic. Furthermore, if you put yourself a good distance away from it and wear a mask, your exposure is almost non-existent. I was around patients on TOBI while I was pregnant 5 years ago, and kept a good distance away while giving it. Myself and my 4 year old are just fine.
