I am re-entering RN career after 10 years of working in construction. I finally got 2 interviews on the same day; one at a hospital's med/surg unit, the other at a nursing home's TCU. Since I want to become a CRNA one day, I prefer the hospital job but I didn't think I had a chance of getting a job there since I got no current experience. The next day I got a job offer from the nursing home. After many months of searching, I took the offer gladly over the phone. However, later that day, the hospital contacted me for references. I had interviews before at the hospital but I never passed the interview stage to the reference stage. Today is Friday, the nursing home wants me to start attending the orientation next Monday, but I wouldn't know about the hospital's hiring decision until late next week. Technically, I can attend the three day long orientation at the nursing home and ditch them when I find out I got hired by the hospital. But that is not fair for the nursing home. So, I think I should go to the nursing home on Monday (since their HR is closed over the weekend) and explain the situation to them and hope that they would let me wait one week and let me come back to work for them if I don't get hired by the hospital. So, my question is, would they possibly let me do that? Or would they toss me out of the building? What is the normal industry practice in situation like this? Thanks for any advice.
I am a DON in a nsg home. My personal opinion is I would much rather you come in and be honest with us. I get it, I really do - I understand you will take that hospital job if offered and I'd just as soon not waste my time on you if you're going to leave 3 days after you start.Depending on my initial impression of you will determine if I am willing to wait to see if you are going to get the other job or not. Would also depend on how desperate I am to get shifts filled - maybe I can't afford to wait another week to get someone in the door.

Thank you so much for your comment Nascar nurse. Your comment made my decisions down to two: 1. forget about the hospital job for two to three years 2. Go to the nursing home Monday morning and explain the situation.
