Very Concerned (please read)

hello,
I am a student working on my CNA currently and then going to a fast paced LPN school but i do have concerns about currently and futuristicly......

ok i applied for a job as a UA(Unit Assistant) and a MA (Meal Assistant) at a local heritage manor its a nursing home and i did do a on the spot drug test and i will be honest like i was with them 2 weeks prior to the testing i did smoke pot at a party i guess enough to make me fail i want to be a nurse more than anything in my life i have been clean but this is the catch.....since i failed i have been put on the hot list for heritage manors all over the state... i have to do my CNA clinicals at a heritage manor and LPN clinicals at one to will this effect anything since i failed i have been clean and i do have to take drug tests for my CNA and LPN program can i still do my schooling or will the facilitys look me up and see im on there and kick me out im soo worried its not like im going to work for them......can someone one please give me some answers ive been loosing sleep over this you dont no how bad i want to do this with my life.....i wish i never did it.....but can i still get my CNA and LPN and someday RN with this happened please right back as soon as possible please and thank you.....

Just because they have you on their list doesn't mean you will be on the list for the school. As far as I know the facilities don't do background checks on the students, that is the school's job. At least where I live you have to go through a background check and drug test to be accepted into the program, so if you are clean for those and get accepted I doubt there will be a problem. When you are doing clinicals you aren't working for the facility, you are working for the school.Hope that helps and good luck!

If you are on a list with Heritage that states you failed a drug test a drug test with them then I would assume yes, this will very much affect your ability to do clinical rotations at one of their facilities. Your school will have a duty to let Heritage know who is attending clinicals with them and presumably your name will pop up as a reject. I suggest you let your school know asap so that alternative arrangements can be made to do clinicals some place else, that is IF they will even consider you as a student given this record. I don't see any alternative to owning up to your mistake at this point and throwing yourself at their mercy.As a side note, it just blows my mind that someone who professes to wanting to be a nurse so much would throw the chance away for the sake of one "fun" night.

I think you will probably be fine. I don't think that an employer like a NH and schools talk to each other about their students, and I am SURE that no one that actually works on the ward at this NH is going to know anything (HR would, but not the staff.) You probably won't be able to get a job at Heritage ever again, but hopefully there are other places to work in your area. Just keep your nose clean from now on.

Rather, give this guy a break!!!! Half the universe has used an illicit substance here or there. Heck, if you count alcohol, that would be more like 99% ... it's just that booze clears your system much faster than weed does (actually, just about everything clears your system faster than weed, so if you are going to indulge, probably not the best choice if you are looking for jobs.) There are non-users, casual users, and addicted people in every field of employment, INCLUDING NURSING. Just because the guy inhaled once doesn't mean that he is going to be a bad nurse or a bad employee. My thoughts are that if one professes to be a caring nurse one should not so completely judgmental.

Oh, dear-I'm so sorry this is causing you so much grief. If worse comes to worse, find another program, move if you must. You may want to speak frankly with a faculty member that you trust and ask them if this is going to be an issue. Like the previous poster suggested, it probably won't be (when I did my clinicals, I don't think the institutions checked up on me, or knew me from Adam) but you wouldn't want to be halfway through a program and get snagged up over this. This doesn't have to derail your dreams but it may set you back a bit. Good luck!

I have to agree that I would inform the school that you were flagged by the employer, just so that nothing unfortunate pops up at a bad time. I wouldn't stress over it too much, red flagging is more for human resources to know you aren't a good candidate for a position than it is for anything else.

No, I don't need to give anyone a break. My comments were not about whether or not I agree that pot should be legalized etc, etc, etc. That has been discussed on this board ad nauseum. Whether any of us agrees that pot is harmless, not harmless, should be legal, is just the same as a drink, whatever, isn't the issue here. What is the issue is that we all know the rules as they apply in the real world today, and the real world says that if you smoke pot before taking a drug test well guess what, you are probably going to fail it. And you know what, I have trouble having a lot of sympathy for anyone who does fail a test and then wants to whine about it afterwards.

At my school your name goes on list before class starts; if the hospital where we are to do clinicals rejects you for any reason. You are immediately dropped from the program

Geez, Missbecky, you really came down hard, didn't you? I think TakeTwo was just reminding the young Padawan that actions do have consecquences. Not all of them, but this one could. If the program drug tests for THC, and he did pot less than 30 (or so) days ago and he gets tested, then this one could cost him. Yes, I agree, alcohol is a more widespread problem, but it doen't really apply here, does it? I hope this won't have lasting consequences, but sometimes stepping on your wang does. My $.02.

I don't know where you guys have been going to school, but where I've gone, the school has to provide a list of the names of students that will be using the facility for clinicals. This failed drug test might not show up on a background check, but if the school has to provide a list, and your name is on it, I'd have to say a red flag would be raised.
