How much help?

How much help do the other nurses give you on your shift? How much do you help other people? I for one do not like to sit on my shift, IDK if its working nights and that constantly moving helps me feel more awake or I just feel like I'm not being paid to sit but I am always doing something. Other people are reading magazines/looking online and I'm stocking the med room, nutrition room, hall closets, stuffing charts, taking other peoples pts for walks, changing their beds, giving them bed baths. I don't know maybe its just me but most of the people where I work don't seem terribly interested in helping others without being asked, which I think is kind of sad. It would be so much nicer if we all helped each other. I firmly believe I should only be reading a magazine if everyone else has time to read a magazine and all of the patients are sleeping.
Maybe I'm lucky but my fellow nurses for the most part do help each other out. If one of us has time to goof off it is because all of our work is done although that is pretty rare.

On our unit, the nurses are great at helping each other out. Now whether I'll actually have a second nurse around to help me out is another story

We have to, because some nights we have no tech, no clerk, patients crumping, and others hanging out in Geri-chairs all night.There is one nurse on staff who doesn't really like to help out. It depends on her mood. But there are people like that in every profession, on every shift!

Where I work anyone new is told up front.We ALL help each other, you NEVER use the words "that's not my patient", if a bell is ringing you get it and if you are done your work you go and help someone who is not.

I too feel the same. I've asked help from my co-workers and none of them are eager to help out. All of them want to be done with their work and leave on time. It makes me sad and burnt out. Last night, I had an admission at 2130. Seriously, this is LTC, 2130 is too late. My shift ends at 2300. Too much paperwork, and we have a float -- who only did the V/S. After my med pass, I have a chart full of paperwork. My nurse supervisor left on time. I stayed until 0200. I'm overworked and I only have been there for 2 months. I felt like crying on the way home.

Read a magazine?!? I want to work on your unit! We do have pretty good teamwork and frequently ask each other if we need help. The shifts are very few and far in between to be able to sit and look at a magazine on my unit. And IDK it always seems like I'm running the most doing one thing or another. I always seem to have a pt or 2 that needs some TLC, a pain crisis, or just likes to talk in the middle of the noc. Either way I'm much happier to be up on my feet and moving around.
