Keeping Up With Your DayRating: (votes: 0) I am a relatively new nurse on a busy unit that is facing a staffing crisis. So far, I able to keep my patients cared for, medicated, clean and fed, and have reached out to my coworkers to find better ways to stay caught up with my charting and get out in a somewhat timely manner. However, I find that I'm often dehydrated and hungry because I can't find the time to get a drink or grab a snack. I leave my water bottle at the nurses station, but often can't get to it because someone else is in my seat-we have a limited number of computers, so social work, PT, or a physician hops on if I'm away for a few minutes. Any tips for managing better? All input appreciated. Kudos for being able to keep up and asking coworkers for pointers to make your practice more efficient. Perhaps I'm not clear on the dehydration problem? Why can't you say "excuse me" and reach across to grab your drink? I also kept granola bars and bananas with me which hold me over when I couldn't get a formal lunch which was the way it was at almost all my nursing jobs, except VA. Comment:
I keep a granola bar and candies in my pocket just in case I don't have time to eat anything. I also take the time to get some water from the ice machine or my water bottle when needed and never feel sorry for it either. Your health is important too. As far as getting your charting done and getting out on time - try to chart as you go. I found that taking a minute or two after completing an assessment/procedure/whatever to chart saves you a lot of time at the end of the day. Also cluster your activities. Assessment with meds and dressing changes etc followed by charting. Also, keep a brain sheet. Lots on this site if you don't already have one. With time it all gets easier. Good Luck!
