Hi my name is Kay I am a ninth grader in high school from Iowa I was wondering if I can still be a nurse even though I have adhd cause if not I will be devastated because I have always wanted to be a nurse I am just crying just thinking about someone saying no to me that I can't cause right know that's always what I wanted to be which is a nurse so please tell me thanks
I can't see a reason why you couldn't be as long as your ADHD is well managed under the care of your doctor.

I have had several students with ADHD. Yes you can get past that. Try rereading things you want to post, then cutting up the thoughts into individual sentences.Take all the science and math classes you can, having learned some of the basics really helps in the college courses you need as pre-requisites to get into nursing school.

Why would ADHD prevent you from becoming a nurse? There are very few disabilities that would preclude everyone affected by them from working in a given profession.

Far more important than what kind of an impact ADHD might have on your life is how you're reacting to this possibility. "Crying just thinking about someone saying no" is something you are going to have to work on, and work on hard.You will be told "no" for many things, for many reasons, throughout the rest of high school, into your college experiences and throughout your job hunting, and throughout your employment and onward for the rest of your life."No" is a fact of life, at approximately 14 years of age it's a hard thing to face, but it's a stark reality. Colleges WILL tell you no. Nursing programs will tell you no. Instructors, clinical situations, all will tell you 'no'.ADHD is not a reason to not go into nursing; if you want it, WORK toward it. ADHD won't stop you from becoming a nurse, but blaming it for not allowing you a career in nursing sure will. Don't get me wrong, I'm NOT SAYING that you are doing this, I'm only saying that I've seen it happen many times, when something gets in someone's way....rather than pushing the thing OUT of their way, they allow it to block them forever, and become a victim to whatever the problem was.Don't become a victim. Become a nurse

You actually have a lot going for you.1. You know what you want to do.2. You have identified a possible barrier to getting what you want.Your next step now is to identify HOW your ADHD may keep you from becoming a nurse and putting yourself on an pathway to learn how to compensate for this condition. This will require you to be very honest with yourself, to be humble, to be courageous and to be steadfast. How does your ADHD keep you from succeeding where you want to now? Whatever it makes difficult for you now, it will make difficult for you as you become a nurse as well. If you can get a plan in place now to help yourself be more successful, those plans will in turn help you reach your dream. Nobody who becomes a nurse is 100% perfect. We all have something that could have kept us from achieving this. It isn't the condition that will stop you, it is your willingness to get help in dealing with your condition and learning how to do things that mitigate the limitations ADHD puts on you. Learn to break your tasks for school into parts.Learn to make yourself to-do lists and learn to utilize your phone, computer or even just post-it notes on your bathroom mirror for reminders. Check over your reminders several times daily and check them off as you get things done. Consider seeing a therapist that specializes in ADHD. At 14 years of age, your executive function is still developing. You can actually improve your performance as an adult by helping to train it NOW. That is a wonderful thing! A therapist can help you with exercises that will help that part of your brain to grow an develop. They can also help you with the self esteem issues that can arise from ADHD, to identify where you are successful and help you formulate a plan that will lead to continued and increased success in these and other areas.You can do this! You are already ahead of SO many of your peers. Most people at 14 have no idea who they are or what they want. You have everything it takes to do this. It will not be easy, but just think how it will be worth it. Good luck!

As an aside, people with ADHD generally make great nurses and are great multi-taskers. :-)
