I would just love some feedback as I've been scheduled to precept a new nurse who has more experience than I do . I still feel like I'm a novice. I have 1.5 years experience.
I'm not really a fan of having new nurses precept . I love my experienced nurses and appreciate them so much for their knowledge. I'm not even getting paid more lol. Anyways just wondering what everybody's thoughts are on newer nurses precepting other nurses.

thanks
Well, if you have a year and a half of experience then you are certainly not a novice nurse anymore. And you definitely shouldn't feel that way either. If you do, there's something wrong.

Comment:
I am over two years in and feel like a novice nurse….it could be the speciality I work in, but I am sure I will feel like a novice nurse for a few more years.

Even if she has more nursing experience than you, as far as your facility's policies, culture, and practices she still has plenty she can learn from you. There's always different ways of doing things in different places and you'll be able to show her how things are done there.

Comment:
Are you teaching her the job (she's new to your speciality?) or familiarizing her to the new place?

Comment:
When I was precepted I had a new nurse percepting me when I was also a new nurse. She basically started with "ask me questions but if there is something I don't know the answer to then we will look it up together." It's a learning curve, even experienced nurses won't know everything. The main thing is that you were chosen for a reason, obviously management has no issues with you percepting. One of the biggest things is to teach the "new nurse" policy and how the work environment runs.
