In the meantime...

I've been out of nursing school for nearly 6 years. I'm currently looking for employment. Unfortunately there are no nearby refresher courses in my area, I have to wait until october for the next closest (2hrs awaya)class to begin. In the meantime (while looking for jobs) how do I refreshen my memory on nursing content and skills on my own? What do you feel are the basic information (besides vital signs, infection control, fire safety) a nurse MUST know?? At the temp agency I was hired at yesterday gave a quiz that made me feel, ugh, not so confident. I would like to be prepared, at least knowledge wise for when I enter the workforce, if I get hired prior to taking the refresher course in october.
I give you credit for re-entry into nursing after six years of not working in the profession (if I understood you correctly). There are many, many topics. My 2 cents: 1. Med calculations, 2. HIPAA, 3. Corporate Compliance, 4. Pain management modalities. With what types of facilities does the agency contract? This info might help in giving you more suggestions.

I know that there are several "refresher" courses that people can take. I believe I have heard rumblings of some being offerred online, but don't quote me on that. If you take one of those courses, it can help jog your memory and shows potential employers that you are taking initiative and understand this whole "being away from the bedside for six years" issue.
