First job

What was your first day like, on your very first job?
The first day was more shadowing and learning the feel of the place. I gave a few subcutaenous shots for symptom mgt and did charting on a couple pts with help to learn the system but for the most part it was shadowing and learning more about our policies and procedures.

I sat in a classroom full of dewy eyed new grads, found the only other Paramedic/RN new hire in the back of the room, and sat through days worth of lectures and tons of powerpoints and textbook materials on policies, procedures, administrative regulations, and Press-Ganey score boosting exercises. We took it all quite seriously, of course. Then we went into Nursing orientation for two weeks. Which consisted of MORE classroom lectures, powerpoint presentations, and videos.Eventually, I got to get into the ICU where I met my preceptor. And then the real learning began.

It was so long ago for me that I am not sure that I can even remember that far back. LOL. To be honest though I was so absolutely terrified of being out on the floor that I remember very little. I had my cap on with the little black stripe and my white nursing dress and shoes and was trying to keep all of it clean and white...what was I thinking. Stress!!!I do remember carrying a notebook and took notes furiously trying to write everything down about the hospitals rules and where they kept their supplies and where the lab was, that type of thing. I don't think my bladder even worked my whole first week!

A big headache and belly ache from being so nervous lol...but the second day was muchhh better
