A Word to the Wise

7 Just a word to the wise: you never know who is reading your posts on Allnurses.com. You never know how your posts may influence a possible employment position, positivey or negatively. When you post, consider that your next boss may be reading and make sure that you want those words out there before you hit "submit." That's all I'm saying.

This is especially true if you use your name as your screen name. Then they don't have to guess if there is someone like you or circumstances like your's.

My nurse manager wears combat boots and tracks mud through the ER.

Same goes for Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. You never know who's lurking or checking up.

Oh yes; this age of modern technology is awesome but at the same time anyone can look. When I post I don't use my real name as the screen name and I don't divulge private client information. Nothing that can identify me to anyone where I live. I usually put the correct info in my profile. I don't have anything to hide.

Anyone have any problems with cyber or internet bullies? I had to close down a perfectly lovely facebook page secondary to her goofball antics.

Sooo....KateRN1....are u a nurse manager or some kind of healthcare administrator? Just had to ask. You are right on the money though. In this job market, you had better believe that potential employers are checking social networking sites out. They are checking because they do not want anyone who might be less than "cream of the crop" in their opinion, and/or someone who seems like they could make trouble for them. They check credit reports as well. I also think they are checking to see if they know of anyone you might associate with. In other words.....they want more than a criminal background check. They want your entire history, your shoe size, and ultimately, your soul.

I think I'm OK (glancing furtively behind me ) I don't talk about nursing at all on Facebook or Twitter. It's an excellent reminder, though. It's very easy to forget how truly public our little chats are, that not all who are reading are our friends, and operate with the assumption that they will be there forever, visible by anyone.
