This is one of the most heartbreaking, yet inspiring articles I have ever read. You remind me of the OB nurse who held my newborn daughter as she breathed her last, because I couldn't. Thank God for people like you. What a beautiful story, Dutchgirl.:redpinkhe

Dutch, so many of us, as young nurses, witnessed things which today, as older, more assertive, women, we'd never tolerate. Today we'd question, challenge, and advocate strongly. That mother had every right to know her child was born alive. She had every right to be offered the opportunity to hold him. That dear little soul was blessed to have YOU there to comfort him. Thanks for sharing this story.

A beautiful, heartbreaking story. Thank you for being such a kind, loving nurse, and holding that infant until he passed.

If I was that susan, I would of have been blessed to have a nurse like you,you were caring, innocent, courageous, and there was nothing you could of have done more back then. It was way over your head. The lord above always has a plan and you were apart of it.YOU WHERE THAT BABY'S ANGEL and now he's your angel watching over you and giving you the strength to share your experience about him to care and educate others.

You are given a gift-An angle wink I have been told by a mentor in hospice--the compassion and understanding that a life needed you at that very moment. Kudos to you for being a thinking caring individual in a time when women were still finding their voices. :wink2::angel2:

Very touching. I work in the NICU and see these little ones all the time and boy, lots of these babies come along with ethical dilemmas. Thank you for sharing this experience.I'm so glad the baby's last moments were spent with someone who cared. As hard as it must have been, it is a gift.

I just discharged a patient the other day that was a former 22 weeker. The baby was 4 months old when it left the hospital, but had no known medical problems when discharged. This baby was a miracle! I took care of her from the day she was born till the day she left. She will always hold a special place in my heart. We have a few 22/23 weekers in the the unit right now.
