madwife, hospitals can be heartless places. I saw this often when I worked in one. Hopefully when you are healed and ready to work again ,a job in another facility( not necessarily a hospital) will open up for you. Take heart. You have people who care about you. Concentrate on getting better. There are better days ahead.:redpinkhe

I know the feeling. I had my own private short and long term disabilty insurance for years. It has come in handy. I was also covered for 6 months of health insurance, though I had to pay out towards the end of that time. I had complications from surgery in August 2008 and have not been able to return to work. I did get a call from my department head letting me know that I could apply to be rehired if I wanted to and was able to work . I did NOT get warning about my health insurance expiring. I would not have known other than I was talking to the insurance company about another issue....at which time they told me that I would not be covered just two days in advance. Feb. of 2009 my husband got laid off his job,on the day his healt insurance would be covering me. Fishy. I am on social security disabilty now. I had to apply for it as a condition of my long term disabilty insurance. So now I get two checks on different calander dates. You may have to look into Social Security disabilty. Good luck. Hope you recover soon, and get your job back. Perhaps you can apply as you are familiar with their unit sec. system.

I am so, so sorry! I suggest when you are feeling better you might get a lawyer...this does not sound legal! Regardless, your attitude is inspiring. We will all stand in front of our Creator some day, and those that intentionally participated in thisevil will have some 'splainin to do!

While I'm certainly saddened by all that has happened to you, I see that you have a strong and persevering attitude. Keep it up. Good things will come, given time. God bless and I'll certainly send a prayer your way.

I am always appalled- not surprised but appalled at how health care workers are treated. I know a woman who had breast cancer who was terminated after missing some time. At the worst time of her life she was abandoned by her employer after caring for others for so long. I know a woman who was having heart problems and was not allowed to have light duty while another employee who was pregnant was. Of course she ended up having a major heart attack even though it was obvious that she was unable to cope with the workload. After many years of service she will never work again. More examples of how we are only bodies to our employers. Slots to be filled on the schedule.I suspect that your hospital is trying to avoid any possibility of worker's comp. Back claims are a huge loss to hospitals. How does your doctor feel that this bulging disc problem came to be? Is it work related? Did you have a history of back pain? How long did you work there?A word of advice from my own experience- no one has a much to lose as you and no one worries about you getting your paperwork in on time but you. Always have someone go to the doctor office if there is a crucial deadline for paperwork. It is hard to put you off or forget about you if you are sitting in the waiting room. I had to have my dad's doctor sign a paper for medical records so they would release his chart for an insurance claim. I took a copy to the doctor's office and had him sign it while I waited. It is the only way to see that it gets done. You will recover and move on, but I agree with the person who suggested you look into disability. If you have any permanent damage you may be entitled since your life may never be the same. A lawyer? I am not so sure unless you think this could be work-related. Sometimes you can have a free consult and if that is the case it might not hurt. You probably have several years to bring a lawsuit against them though. You may need some time to handle your health first- keep good records.

Thank you for posting your experience. I am sickened and saddened at what you have experienced. However, I think that with your positive attitude, you will find yourself on top of things quickly. That doesn't mean it will be easy....I work for a hospital that will pay for everything in-house 100%. That makes me nervous, since I work there and see the deficiencies....I wish you a speedy and full recovery! Life is too short to be unable to work, unable to enjoy your time off, etc.My thoughts and prayers are with you, and again, I thank you for your honest post about your experience...it is a warning to all of us...Unfortunately, since healthcare is a business rather than what it should be, we as employees, patients, or both, get the short end of the stick. Whether or not that will change remains to be seen...I don't have a lot of hope in that respect, but I feel for everyone who gets screwed by the system that seeks to profit from illness, preventable or not, and especially for anyone who works in healthcare and gets doubly screwed after undergoing an in-house procedure and experiences any of the possible, expected complications.Wishing you the best!!!!Spenmom

Who cares for the caretakers? Certainly not the ones who employee us. Have you ever broken down the term " Human Resources "? Human = people, us. Resources = something to use up, discard and replace.

You don't mention if this was an abdominal or vaginal hist. My immediate reaction was, damage to discs as a result of poor positioning in OR, in which case the hospital is liable-if she can prove it!I'm assuming the out patient treatment was facet block and rhizotomy; unfortunately only a temporary solution. If your friend is carrying around a few more pounds than she should be, my best advice to her would be to lose it and get onto an exercise regime that focuses on rehabilitating her back injury. Hopefully the upper discs won't herniate if she takes care not to over-exert herself. My best regards to her, and nukes to her HR department....

Madwife, my condolences go out to you. Please hire a lawyer. My sister has a long term case with disability. It looks like the CEO was giving you a runaround. I believe the law states that compensation has to pay for disability. I know it has to if there is a work related injury, but I don't know if that applies otherwise. A legal consultation should be free though.
