GI surgery and PE?

I was wondering if GI surgeries pose any risk for pulmonary embolism? I wouldn't think so because PEs come from a LE clot, but the mere immobility that it causes could pose a risk I suppose... just curious.

A cousin of mine had a PE following a gastric surgery. There's a series of risk factors for PE, not least of which is immobility. Fortunately, PE's have some fairly simple preventatives that work pretty reliably.

Absolutely. Any type of surgery or trauma puts someone at a higher risk for VTE. Almost all surgical patients in my unit are put on chemical and mechanical VTE prophalaxis, unless they have some type of contraindication. Clots can also come from different places such ad your arms and heart(afib).
