A not-for-profit aka NPO is a company that does not distribute it's surplus (profit) to shareholders, employees, or other investors. Instead the surplus is reinvested to achieve the companies goals.

Frequently religious-based, or community-based, not privately owned.

Comment:
Some people ASSUME the not-for-profit is a charity hospital. Not so. They are just set up differently for tax purposes. They sell bonds to raise capital while for-profit facilities sell stock.
