Is it weird that I love wound care?

I was telling a couple of my friends the other day how I love doing wound care and dressing changes and they though I was a freak, like there was something really wrong with me. One made a joke that they would see me on nancy grace in the future. Is this because they weren't in the medical field or do any of you like wound care too?
I like doing wound care, packing wounds and wrapping things up nice and pretty. A bonus is pus. Love the oozy stuff.So no, I think you are normal.

We each have been given our own gifts. We need people who like wound care too. All are better off when we each find our own gift.

Not sure what the "Nancy Grace" comment was about, but no you are not weird to love wound care. I think every nurse will find a specialty they love if they look long enough. And thank God not everyone enjoys the same kind of nursing. If everyone liked Psych then who would help deliver babies, take care of the elderly, assist those who are terminal? I personally don't mind doing dressing changes but certainly wouldn't chose to concentrate on that area. So bless you and all the other nurses who love the challenge of healing a Stage 3 decub, so I can spend more time taking care of the things that aren't your "cup of tea". There's room for everyone.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one! I'm not a specified wound care nurse, but wouldn't mind being one. I'm a new RN and realized by a couple of the dressing changes I've had to do, that I really enjoy it. Especially when I can tell that they are healing. It's kind of rewarding. I don't really understand the nancy grace comment either, except she was trying to imply that I was sadistic/such as those that murder others....I don't know, but it kind of offended me. I guess people who aren't in nursing just don't really understand. Maybe I'll just withhold such details from my non-nursing friends.

THose NOT in nursing do not understand anything (most of them don't). It's not werid at all. You should specialize and be a wound care/ostomy nurse. Seems like you would be a good fit for it!!! Best of luck.

I love it and, as you said, you can actually see things healing. Tangible evidence that you are making a difference is nice!

You are perfectly normal. I am probably the only nurse in my hospitalthat gets excited when they get a patient with a new ostomy.

Wound care makes my "fix it" gene happy. I have seen a wound-vac do some truly amazing things. Nothing like having one of those leak and you can't figure out what's wrong, you finally get it right and watch the vacuum take hold. Yes, I have done a happy dance at 2 am when that thing finally stops alarming!

I think wound care is the bomb! And nurses who perform excellent wound care? They are great! Because when you see a pressure ulcer that started out big enough to put your fist in sloowwwwwwly start to heal and close up over the course of a couple of months, you know what a difference great wound care makes! So here's to you, wound care nurses, for getting excited about things that make "normal" people feel, well, OOGY!
