Having problems with body fluids.

I didn't realize I have problems with dealing with body fluids until i actually started dealing with them. Have no problems with blood, but the rest....:smackingf . I will rather do twice the paper work I'd have then change a diaper!!!! It bothers me so much I consider a career change
double mask, double glove

Get a dropper bottle breath freshener, and put a couple of drops on the mask- it helps. As far as the "material" itself- it's just used food and water. It gets better; I'd get light headed when someone SAID they were nauseated By the time I had to stop working, my view had changed to "just don't hit my shoes" Exposure grants immunity

Pros and cons are always there in all field...And so in this also..To consider a career change is not a solution of any problem..You should face the problem and than you can become a habitual of it and than there will be not much any problem...

Try to think about it from the patient's perspective. It is kind of like the loving care and attention you give a baby. How wonderful to have a clean, dry bottom when you can't do so for yourself.

Tait's perspective is exactly how I deal with it. I am horribly sensitive to smells and the poop aspect isn't something anyone loves. I just try to see it from the patient's perspective, recognize how difficult it would be were I the one in that bed soiling myself and I take care of them the way I would want to be cared for....that helps me completely get past the ICK! factor. It is icky for them too with a hearty dollop of humiliating on top. It makes me feel good to help them.

thinking of how the patient's feel might not change your reality/perception at all. if you really can't handle it then keep considering another field. are you still a student or a nurse? i didn't think i could handle it as a student and after about 1/2 month as a nurse it all changed and i barely cared. but yes, some smells still get to me.

Nobody's perfect, we're all just human. It's as hard for the person being cleaned as it is for you--you're not sitting naked half naked in front of strangers covered in stool and urine. Nobody likes body fluids. Nobody says you have to. So approach your issues strategically.Try to work in pairs whenever possible. I you have someone who is incontinent, get someone to help you. 1. It makes the job go faster and you're less focused on the body fluids.2. If you need to turn your head in a pinch so can gag and quickly regain your composure, or step away for a minute, someone is there to talk to the patient so they don't see.In the past when I've had a patient with a particularly smelly body fluids, I use the Vicks vapoinhaler just to kind of clear my nose. I don't use it all the time, just when I really need it--like before lunch.Hope it helps.
