Setting up PCA pump-confused!

Hey everybody. I'm confused about how to prime the tubing of a pca pump. One nurse showed me to prime it manually by pressing the vial all the way through the tubing, past the Y connector. Another nurse showed me to only prime to the y tube. What happens if you prime past the y tubing? If you only prime to the y tubing how will you get the air out of the end? I'm just so confused!
Most pumps have a priming function that completes priming the rest of the tubing. Consult your IV P&P manual for assistance.

How you should properly prime the pump will depend on what pump brand you are using. I suggest you ask your unit educator since she would be more skilled on the specific pump.
