36 Can we start with grammer, speling, and punctiation?

I am amazed at the number of postings in here that assault the written English language. I am not referring to perfection, Lord knows I make plenty of mistakes myself. I am definitely not referring to those who's first language is not English. I am speaking to the outright ignoring of the basics.

It doesn't take but a second to capitalize your "I's." Really it doesn't.

Perhaps I am just old, cranky, and out of touch with the texting generation.

But when i c posts with run on sentencis multiple mispels lack of punctuation like apostophes in conjuctions im wonderin if u r able 2 c what im saying lol i mean. omg. we look like illiterit.

****** me off too. Im no grammar nazi, but when I see posts like that, I skip over them. Even when I text, I write it out. The i phone makes it easy. Society is getting dumber and dumber. Its sad really. Those posts, I can't even read it take me so long. I have to slow down to understand the idiot speak.

Funny how the disrespect for nursing stems even without an analysis of the nurse's writting skills.

It does get a bit annoying. If I see too much "text speak" in a post that it starts to hurt to read it, I just skip over it.However, being part of the original "Me" generation I also understand that kids usually do turn out ok. Lord knows, when I was growing up we heard a constant and deafening refrain that we (boomers) were going to be the death of the world as we knew it. The world still turns and most of us have a decent enough grasp of the language. I think the texters do as well. I do wish they would confine texting to texting appropriate venues, though.

This is actually addressed in the Terms of Service:Desiring to maintain professionalism, text speak (also known as chatspeak, txtspk, texting language or txt talk) is discouraged. Along with using proper English spelling and punctuation, this shows respect for the owner, other bulletin board members, guests, and makes it easier to read your message.

I agree. I know that not everyone is an English major and can do all aspects of grammar, punctuation, etc., however, It is important to do the best we can when we have to write. We all know how we gripe about doctors's handwriting and how easily mistakes can be made by incorrect interpretation. Dictionaries are readily available online, iphone or hard copy. Thesaurus, etc are available as well. No one really minds typos such as hte for the, adn for and, we all know those happen. But the outright missed words, grammar, spelling and the rest, make us look uneducated. I know that when I text, I use some of the text speak, but not much, shoot..I have auto-correct on my iphone and it makes enough funny "corrections" for me, that I don't need to help it out!!!.If you have poor writing skills, perphaps an evening class could help? a tutor, something. Many jobs request those with good WRITTEN communication skills, so we need to at least have the basics down.

I must agree with PeepnBiscuitsRN...If you are going to complain about the way PEOPLE are writing on this site, then you should address it generally. Please do not single out young nurses. It does not at all show integrity. It makes it look like you have something against young nurses....... I am constantly surrounded by old, middle aged, and young nurses who refuse to write, or speak, for that matter, in a way that is legible/audible. Love your "tongue in cheek" ...... funny! I think we have all become too familiar with quick text messaging and then don't switch back to typing real words and sentences at the appropriate times
