New job. Still on orientation..and just found out that I cannot use any of my accrued sick time until I have 90 hrs in my bank??? Seems So stupid!
I think it is to try and prevent you calling off. we cant use any for the first 90 days

We can't use any of our's until we have been out for 3 days straight, and that is only if you actually have 240 hours in your "bank." Then, of course, you only get paid for that 3rd day; no pay for the first 2 days you are out! Isn't nursing great.

I couldn't use PTO until I was off orientation. I don't think that's uncommon.

That seems So wrong. I did call out...had the flu. I'm Not one of theses nurses that works Sick!

When I worked in our state's mental hospital, we had a great many days off available to take. Unfortunately, time off to be taken specifically when we were ill, while there on paper or in the computer, was hard to actually take off and BE PAID FOR. Sad to say, most of us didn't get sick according to the schedule. Instead, most of us ended up using one of our personal days, a comp day, a vacation day, etc. We were given our birthdays (or a day in lieu of) off and one time I used that. It was just easier! We couldn't use any accrued sick time until we were off our 90 day probationary period. Of course! So who got bronchitis about midway through?!

Comment:
That seems like a pretty standard policy.

I've never worked somewhere that didn't have a rule about PTO in the first so many months after being hired. When I worked in the hospital, earned time was not considered "earned" until after 90 days of employment.

Only one job that I worked could you use PTO if at 30 days after completing orientation, if you worked full time and X hours worked if you were part time or per diem. I think the standard is usually minimum 90 days post orientation, you can bank but you are not entitled to this benefit. If you think of it as insurance rather than as an 'earned benefit'....I've never worked at a job were you could use sick/PTO time during orientation, you were lucky you accrued time during that period.
