How many beds? over 900? also what is considered a small hospital? What's average?
Very interesting question. I work in a 26 bed hospital. I guess you would consider us small!

Interesting question. I work the 50 room er of a 355 bed hospital and consider us to be a small to medium size operation.

I tried googling an answer to your question without much luck. I believe that the hospital models are changing due to the economics involved. Back in the day, large hospitals, like Mass General had several thousands of beds but, just as airliner size is "downsizing" due to the changing economy, I think that hospital size is also changing. Interesting question. Maybe someone with hospital admin background will give a definitive answer.

Quote from john-mWould be considered large for someone coming from a 13 bed hospital.

We have just under 700 beds and treat over 450,000 patients a year (includes, day surgeries, outpatient clinics, etc). We're also a designated treatment hospital for parts of Canada's Far North.Large depends on your perspective like loriangel said.My hospital (size wise) is probably small compared to some of the major US and European hospitals.Or a freaking huge nightmare to those in smaller hospitals.

I consider 400 or more beds to be large. I work at a 150-ish bed hospital and I think it is small.

Our "Mother Ship" hospital (where I work) is 700 plus beds. Our "smallest" is 200 plus.

When I worked in a 1200 bed county hospital, I had a per diem gig at a "small" 400 bed community hospital, this was in metro NY. I now work in northern New England at a 25 bed hospital, the closest major tertiary care center is about 400 beds and considered huge.

I work at a 300 bed, with day surgery and 28 bed ED, and we are considered small to medium. I did a clinical rotation with a 24 bed hospital
