Thanks for sharing. It seemed scary and uplifting at the same time. Scary because of the harsh reality and uplifting because the nurses still have the same passion of wanting to be of service to humanity.

Very nicely written. Thank you!

Welcome to all nurses.com!! You have summed up all of my (and many others here) complaints about our current healthcare delivery model into five short, but powerful paragraphs! I can't wait to see what else you'll contribute to our online community! If this article is any indication, you'll fit right in with us!!!

A very well written article!!

Quote from wkndnrseAs a nation, where did we ever get the notion that our personal health, the acquisition and maintenance of it, was the responsibility of a third party. Kathleen

Just going through this last shift. You put my feelings into words

With the changes to Medicare reimbursement and the increased pressure on hospitals to meet the budgetary constraints they are facing, nurses are having to do more with less. New nurses are moving from job to job seeking higher wages while seasoned nurses are basically stuck in their current situations because of retirement plans, or simply the fear of having to test the job market.

Comment:
I think a lot of the seasoned nurses that are staying put are, as pttrfrg said, there for the retirement plans. Also once you have hopped around a bit and gotten a flavor of what it is that you like, and you're good at it, why change just to go somewhere new. For me it's more than wages. It's about the environment of the floor that you work on and the people that you work with. Don't get me wrong, the money helps things too. Just my two pennies worth.
