about drug screen

Today I took a urine drug test for an rn position and the lady asked if I take prescriptions and said there was a faint line on the bottom. She still continued to fingerprint me and said they would call me. I only take celexa and don't abuse drugs. The only thing I can think of is I took 1 mg of xanax several week ago and now I'm terrified. It would be horrible if I don't get this job and/or I get reported. What will happen and what can I do? I've never had this happen.
We can't give medical advice here. If you took Xanax why didn't you say you have a script for that as well? Do you have a script for that?If you ahve valid prescriptions you should be fine. Celexa can cause some false positive results but they should know what these are. Talk with your PCP.

If your results come back positive, be sure to fess up about all prescription meds as well as OTC meds that you have taken in the last week. You could also ask them to run a qualitative test on your urine to determine exactly what substances you have tested positive for. However, they are not required to. They may do it for you...then again, they may just accept the UDS and call it a day on your application. There are two crucial lessons you should take away from this:1. When it comes to drug screens, if/when you are asked what medications you are taking, tell them about everything you are taking: prescription, OTC, herbal, anything. Even if it was one Motrin taken 3 days ago, report it.2. Never take a prescription medication that you don't have a valid prescription for. A lot of drug classes have a very long half-life...and benzos are one of them. A med taken a week ago can come back to bite you in the rear. I hope it all works out for you.

Thanks. I don't have a prescription it was just a one-time thing and I guess since I'm not an abuser I just assumed it would be OK. Am I going to lose my nursing license?

OK thanks for the advice. I definitely can't afford a lawyer so I'm going to hope and pray I just lose the job.

I will concede I know absolutely nothing about how long xanax is traceable in your urine for, but I would imagine if you took one several WEEKS (more than one) ago that I cant see this being an issue at all. As it almost certainly would be out of your urine by then. Benzos are somewhat frequently used in outpatient medical offices (ie the dentist, endos, colonoscopy) as well. So I think all this worrying is completely unnecessary, and id imagine the chances of actually getting in trouble with the BON over this is virtually 0 (I think even the chances of this costing you the job are close to 0).That said if you are abusing prescription drugs and arent even working as an RN yet (where you would be constantly be handling all kinds) that I would make sure that this wont be a habit. As you can get into some major trouble if you have those kind of habits when youre working for real

Comment:
Some think that taking a controlled medication, without having a prescription for it, IS abusing drugs. In any case, I think it's a slippery slope.
