Malpractice insurance

Finally earned GN status (yay!), and waiting for CA to get their you-know-what together so I can take my boards, but I wanted to start shopping for malpractice insurance. I'll do some research on Google, of course, but I wanted your input if you have had good or bad experiences with any particular company or plan. Not sure if it matters, but I'm in CA. I use NSO, have since I graduated mumble years ago. Reasonable prices, and when I first bought the policy, they had a pretty decent discount for new grads. Over the several years, the cost of the policy has increased about $2-$3 dollars for the same coverage.

I *believe* you are going to find the great majority of nurses use NSO, and it's inexpensive if you choose to go that route (just over a hundred bucks a year).Some have riders/inclusions in their homeowners insurance that covers professional liability....just read the policy carefully before assuming it's what you want/need.Lastly.....not everyone gets this coverage, and there's LOTS of threads on this site on the debate for and against professional liability insurance. Those that have it tend to feel very strongly that it's crazy to go without....and those that don't will also feel quite sure that it's a waste of money.Choices, choices

The two major options are NSO (what I have, includes coverage for years post incident, even has coverage if a HIPAA claim is made against me as long as I didn't intentionally violate the act) and ProLiability/Marsh. Cost will vary by your location. Both should give you free online quotes. I know NSO offers a 50% discount first year after graduation. Im sure ProLiability offers something similar.

I use NSO. There is also Mercer, which is endorsed by the ANA.I see liability insurance like medical insurance: I hope I never need to use it, but I feel better knowing that it's there. And yes, I'm dropping $10 a month for a service that I (thank God) aren't using...but there's worse things I can waste $10 on. I won't work without it.

Thanks you guys for the input! I definitely feel like it's a small cost for peace of mind, and I certainly hope to never need it, but I'd rather have it in case I do!
