Would you ask your current employer for a letter of recommendation?

Say, if you were somewhat of a new nurse working in a specialty some say leads nowhere (LTC) and had the opportunity to apply elsewhere and it seemed promising as long as you had some great letters of recommendation? I already have one from a former nursing instructor and one from the academic organization of which I am a member. I am hoping to add one letter from a nursing employer into the mix too. Since my experience is limited, the current employer is really the only one I can ask. Would this seem out of line? I work PRN at this facility and pick up anytime I am asked...

IMO, I think it's acceptable to ask your current employer for a letter of recommendation...after all, the worst they can say is No, right?However, I would choose your reference as well as frame your request wisely.

Agree with the previous post. After all, when you fill out applications you have to list your current supervisor anyway and chances are high they will be called about you. You have to be careful when you approach people, even though they expect this kind of request. A heads up will help insure that they don't say the wrong thing if caught off guard.
