Do nurse managers and recruiters actually listen when an employee gives a verbal referral

I was just curious as to whether nurse recruiters and nurse managers actually listen when an employee or co-worker gives them a verbal referral for a potential employee?

Does this ever actually work for anyone?

I'm just curious. Thanks for any replies!
Yep, sure do.

Comment:
Of course they do. And the better employee you are the more they will take your candidate seriously.

Thanks for the replies! It just always seemed like such a long shot.

I have verbally referred friends and acquaintances to management at my workplace, only to find that these people were eventually hired. So in my personal experience, the people who are responsible with hiring do take referrals seriously. It sure beats allowing an online application to remain untouched in some healthcare system's database, never to be read by anyone who hires.

Yes! I love referring people and seeing them later in that very job!

Yes & rather than giving a sign on bonus to new employees, our facility offers a referral incentive paid to existing employees.

Yes, the applicant puts the employees name down & then if hired, the employee gets a small bonus; however if the new employee stays, there are 2 additional bonus pmts when they are there 6 months & one yr ($1500 total I believe).

I've never referred anyone but I know over several people that got hired that way. Networking is very important for some coveted positions.

I called my boss and gave them the name of someone I knew that was looking for a job and had a background in our speciality. That day my boss pulled their information, interviewed them the following Monday and that person will start working with me in a week or two.

My job has a referral system and incentive. $50(for MAs, I believe) to $15,000 (For MDs/VPs/Directors). Guess I need to call some of my MD friends up, huh? Kinda ambiguous in the middle. I just started and have a ton of nurse friends to refer so hopefully I find out how much that is. Edit: My last job was $200 no matter the job title.

Yes, the verbal referral goes a long way, even for large companies. My husband works for a large medical manufacturer. He felt sorry for someone who worked in a biomed shop in the hospital and turned in the guy's (very sorry looking) resume to his supervisor who was hiring in the area. Well, the guy got the job but couldn't be competent if his life depended on it. A couple accounts refused to let him service them and they had to send someone else before he was finally let go a few years later. My husband's boss said a few weeks after they hired the man, "How well do you really know this guy"....I think an employer trusts that if you are a good employee you will refer good future employees....unfortunately, sometimes it doesn't always work out that way and that's how you end up with co-workers that you have no idea how the heck they got the job in the first place.
