One thing I don't want to do and need advise.

Greetings all, and let me just say that I have been amazed at all the great advise, and so many questions that I have had answered by just reading other peoples posts. So let me just say Thank You, in advance. Ok, first off I passed all of my pre req's for starting the nursing program for Mesa Community College in Mesa AZ a little more than a year ago, and have just sent my confirmation letter back and will be starting the nursing program in January, however.... I am very nervous about male catheter insertion. If it matters, I am a straight (not homosexual) male and blood, guts, code browns and all that doesn't bother me, but I really don't want to have to put a catheter in another man. I would have no problem with a female, but something about grabbing another guy is really starting to freak me out as I most likely will have to do it before long. As a career, I am looking at surgery, ocology, or cardiac and hopefully I won't have too many insertions, but has anybody else had this concern/problem and also what about the ladies, do any of you have this concern/problem when you have to insert one in a female. I know this rambled a little but I am very happy to be starting on this career path and am going through with it no matter what, but just a tad nervous about doing this on another guy. Trust me on this- the guy who is going to get the foley will be more uncomfortable with it than you will be.All joking aside nowInsertion in a woman is more difficult than in a male. There are even some women, especially the elderely and obese, that have to get insertions from the rear. Not fun at all.Once you are there to do a job, you get so focused on the task that you forget about the gender and where you are. It takes time and mental training; but, it does happen.This might help: When you find yourself feeling discomfort, think proctologists.

But when I said no problems with females, I just meant wouldn't feel as uncomfortable as with a man. Also when I asked about the ladies, I meant it as: as a woman, do you find it more uncomfortable/embarassing to do the procedure on a woman like I believe I may find it uncomfortable/embarassing for me a male, to do this to a male patient.But I guess it took reading your reply to realize that ABSOLUTELY it will definetly be worse for the person getting it done to them as opposed to the person doing it. Oh yeah, before I forget, for people wondering about the waiting lists for school, I got accepted into the program May of 07 and Start Jan 09 so a little over 1.5 years of waiting.
