Whic degreeRating: (votes: 0) BS in Sonogrpahy MSN MA in health informaitcs Love all three and can't make a decision. Anyone in the same boat or were you ever in the same boat? I am leaning towards Health Informatics. I want stability and good salary. HELP!! Wow - lucky you! Have you been accepted into all three programs? Are you currently a nurse? Here goes. In my part of the country, sonographers are very much in demand and this is driving salaries higher. The work is meaningful and very interesting with nice working conditions; much less stressful than nursing and normally limited to days plus 'on call' for nights or weekends. Informatics is a great new field. [my oldest child has a masters in biomedical informatics, so I actually know quite a bit about this area.] I thought most informatics programs were computer-science based resulting in a BS or MS degree rather than BA or MA. Most potential employers will look for a heavy duty comp-sci background if you are not a clinician. Pick you school carefully - some are newcomers to this area, and do not measure up those who are already estalished as the leaders in this new field. Hint - check out this website to get an idea of who the 'movers and shakers' are: http://www.amia.org/. BTW, If you happen to be a clinician (RN, Pharm, etc) with a degree in informatics, you will be in very high demand. Most large health care providers hire clinical informaticists & all the 'healthcare oriented' software companies also have a continuous demand. MSN - well, hmm. We need a continuing influx of new nurse leaders who are committed to our profession - so I hope you pick this option. But, (speaking from experience) don't go this route unless you know you really love nursing. Otherwise, it won't be worth the time, effort & money you will have to invest. Comment: Thanks for the response. No, I don't have a nursing degree but took many science courses throughout my career as a student. I have a BS degree in HR Management and want a career that is more secure and stable and can give me a decent living of pay. I have narrowed it down to Sonogrpahy and Medical Informatics. So hard... I don't think that I can make a choice right now. What does your child think of informatics? Good paying and stable career? School is going to cost a lot. The sonogrpahy program I got into is a BS degree. I always thought it would be good to have tech degree like ultrasound and then I could always get into informatics after that. I can work per diem and so forth and with medical informatics I couldn't do that. I also think that what if I grow tired of doing ultrasound day in and out...Where can I go from there? Manager? These are all questions going thru my mind...I just want to make the right decision.I want to specialize in Public Health Informatics. You may laugh at this but I am really not a people person and I like to concentrate on facts and figures and do a job from start to finish without much interruption. Don't get me wrong, I like people but couldn't be a salesperson.I also wonderin will ultrasound ever go away? With technology changing everyday maybe some day there will be a invention where a robot does the work...My mind is running away with me here...Thanks for listening and I look forward to your response.
