I would eventually like to become an RN, but in the meantime I was thinking that the position of unit secretary/coordinator sounded both interesting and a good way to gain experience in a healthcare setting. Most job postings state either completion of health unit coordinator program or experience required. Do you think it makes more sense to take a year long course and spend $2,500 or do you think obtaining my nursing assistant certification + medical terminology would be sufficient? The CNA route would be faster and cheaper as local long term care facilities offer free CNA courses here. I posted this question on my regional board, but received no replies. Thanks in advance for your advice!
It may depend on your location but our secretaries only need medical terminology and even that requirement is waived if a CNA wants to transfer to a secretary position.
