New here...and could really use some feedback

Hi everyone,

This looks like a great forum and I am glad to be a part of it.

Well, long story short, I was a caregiver for about 10 years working with developmentally disabled children, adults and seniors and non DD seniors with dementia. I left the field because I just couldn't afford the minimum wage pay. I loved the field--I loved my job, but I just couldn't pay the bills on $6/hour. I am now kicking around the idea of going back to college for nursing, but am scared (yes scared) that I will be unable to find a job after college--or that the job I get will be low pay and I won't be able to pay off additional student loans. Perhaps my concern is due to the new health care reform and the things I hear (none of which I'm sure are accurate, but I am having a hard time deciphering what I do hear into facts as I'm not in the health care field.) Am I way off track here? It seems like nursing is a great, high demand field to go into, where I can make a decent living doing what I love.

What are your thoughts? Would you enter this field during this time? Points to consider? Any insight is much appreciated.

Hi,While I'm usually not a fan of taking out student loans to go to nursing school especially with as cheap as community colleges are I do still think that nursing is a great profession and one that is in demand. If you want to continue working with the population you have experience with I would doubt you will have a difficult time finding work. Maybe consider getting started with your LPN?Good luck.
