I want to be a nurse but I have misdemeanors

I've tried looking around and I think I know the answer, but some advice from experienced individuals would be greatly appreciated.

In 2001 I was convicted of misdemeanor carrying a concealed deadly weapon. A couple years ago I started college part time with the purpose of getting a nursing degree. One year ago I was convicted of leaving the scene of an accident and public intoxication. This spring it will be time to apply for nursing school, but I fear my record will kill my opportunities. Do I have a good chance to get into nursing school or get licensed? Assuming I get that far would anybody hire me? My academic record is strong; unfortunately my criminal record isn't. Thanks for your input.
Check with your state Board of Nursing for answers to these questions. Licensure is regulated at the state level, and there is variation in how issues are handled.
