The new norm?

I am an experienced nurse who has recently relocated (for the second time in 2 years) so I am looking for a job. I send a resume, cover letter, references etc-whatever the employer asks for in their ad...then I don't even so much as get a thanks we will keep your information on file or ANY sort of response. What's up with this, have things changed so much that employers don't feel it's necessary to be respectful enough to respond AT ALL??
I've noticed this for years. I just keep on trucking until I get a response from someone who shows interest in me. I find I get better results when I go in person to look for work. They can give you the brushoff to your face, but it does take more effort on their part.
